Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- The first unit of the Huaneng Yingkou Power Plant Phase II Project (No. 3 unit), the first ultra supercritical 600-megawatt (MW) coal-fired unit made in China, passed the 168-hour trial operation successfully and was put into official operation in Northeast Chinas Liaoning Province on August 31, 2007.
The first unit of the Huaneng Yingkou Power Plant Phase II is another milestone in the development of Electric Power Industry in China, following the commercial operation of the Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant, the first Chinese-made ultra supercritical 1,000 MW coal-fired unit, at the end of November 2006.
High efficiency, energy conservation and environmental protection are the major features of the unit. Coal consumption for power generation of the unit is 292 grams per kilowatt-hour, which is 70 grams lower than the average level in China. Compared with supercritical units of the same size, this unit could save 140,000 metric tons of standard coal every year. The unit is also low in water consumption. Compared with subcritical units of the same size, this unit could save 1.3 million metric tons of fresh water every year, and the associated seawater desalination plant could save 3.456 million metric tons of fresh water every year. Commercial operation of the unit could play an important demonstration function in the extension of 600 MW ultra supercritical coal-fired units in China, and an important function in securing energy supply in the economic construction and social development in Liaoning Province.
The Huaneng Yingkou Power Plant is a subsidiary of the China Huaneng Group Corporation (Beijing, China), located at the coastal economic zone in Liaoning Province. There are two 320 MW coal-fired units built in Phase I currently in operation. Construction of the Phase II two 600 MW ultra supercritical coal-fired units began in April 2005. Total investment of the project will be approximately $603 million. The second 600 MW unit of Phase II (No. 4 unit) is currently under erection, and is expected to be put into operation by the end of this year.
