Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--First Wind Holdings LLC is doubling its presence in Hawaii with the construction of the 30-megawatt (MW) Kahuku Windfarm on Oahu Island. The windfarm is owned by subsidiary Wind Power LLC. This is the second windfarm that First Wind has built in Hawaii; the 30-MW Kaheawa Pastures Windfarm, owned by subsidiary Kaheawa Wind Power LLC, is near Kihei on the island of Maui.
Kahuku Windfarm is being constructed by RMT Incorporated, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation (NYSE:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin). RMT will install 12 of Clipper Windpower's (Carpinteria, California) Liberty 2.5-MW wind turbine-generators. Official construction commenced in July this year, and commercial operations are expected to begin in early 2011.
The Kaheawa Pastures Windfarm was built utilizing 20 GE 1.5sle wind turbines. Construction of the windfarm began in 2005, and the windfarm began operating the following year. First Wind is considering expanding this windfarm by 21 MW, but the process has been delayed because of permitting issues.
