Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The massive wild fire that caused the evacuation of Fort McMurray in Alberta has also impacted some oil sands operations, according to company and news media reports. Some 80,000 residents have fled the city as a result of the wild fire that continues to burn out of control, according to news reports. Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said Wednesday the fire has continued to spread amid strong westerly winds. The blaze was spread across 7,500 hectares (18,000 acres), and has destroyed 1,600 residential structures in Fort McMurray, province officials said in a press briefing. Located near Canada's Athabasca Oil Sands, Fort McMurray is a key oil production site for the region.

Suncor Energy Incorporated (NYSE:SU) (Calgary, Alberta) has reduced production at its regional facilities to allow employees to get to safety, according to a company statement. Suncor's oil sands mining operations near Fort McMurray include both the Millennium and North Steepbank sites. Shell Canada Limited, a unit of Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS-A) (The Hague, Netherlands), shut down production at its Albion Sands mining operations as a result of the fire, according to news reports. The operations can produce up to 255,000 barrels per day, according to the reports.

The wild fire also supported a rise in the price of oil toward $46 a barrel, according to Reuters.

Fort McMurray and the surrounding region is home to several high-dollar oil sands projects. Suncor's proposed $11 billion Voyageur South Mine is targeted to replace existing feed from Suncor's North Steepbank Extension mine when it is depleted. The mine is expected to produce up to 250,000 barrels per day of bitumen during its estimated 28-year operational life. For more on the project, see Industrial Info's project report.

Suncor also has a 54% interest in Fort McMurray-based Syncrude Canada Ltd., an oil sands joint venture with several other energy companies, with a production capacity of 350,000 barrels per day of crude oil.

Five other large oil sands projects in the area include:
  • Shell Canada's $4 billion Jackpine Above-Ground Oil Sands Mine Expansion by Shell Canada, valued at $4 billion. For more on this project see Industrial Info's project report.
  • Canadian Natural Resources Limited's $3 billion Fort Mackay Horizon Oil Sands Mine Phase IV Expansion. For more on this project see Industrial Info's project report.
