Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A key component of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) development off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal, the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, is now moored about 25 miles from shore, BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, England) said Tuesday.

The FPSO vessel will support Phase I operations at the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) development on the maritime border of the two African nations. BP envisions it will produce about 2.3 million metric tons per year of LNG for the next 20 years.

BP is the project's operator, alongside Kosmos Energy and other Africa-focused companies. Industrial Info is tracking some $2.4 billion worth of active projects associated with GTA. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Project and Plant databases can learn more from a detailed profile of the FPSO and can click here for a list of detailed reports on related projects.

Dave Campbell, the British company's senior vice president for Mauritania and Senegal, said the arrival of the FPSO is emblematic of BP's investments in the energy systems of the future.

"This is a huge landmark step for the project, an innovative LNG development that is leading the way in unlocking gas resources for Mauritania and Senegal," he added. "The FPSO vessel has travelled halfway around the globe, and its safe arrival and installation is testament to the resilience, skills, teamwork and huge effort of all the partners involved."

While not new, LNG has emerged as a desired commodity in the wake of Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Prior to the conflict, the European Union relied heavily on piped natural gas from Russia to meet its energy demands, exposing the geopolitical risks associated with interstate midstream networks.

Ukraine hosts a dense network of Soviet-era pipelines, while operations on the Nord Stream network in the Baltic Sea were suspended after a suspected maritime attack on one of the strings some seven months after the Russian invasion began.

The cross-border development in West Africa is the first such collaboration for Mauritania and Senegal. It also represents Africa's deepest offshore gas production operation, with wells reaching as deep as 1.2 miles below the sea's surface.

From offshore, BP will produce gas using the ultra-deepwater subsea FPSO vessel, which will process the gas and remove heavier hydrocarbon components.

Gas will then be transferred to a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility located on the Mauritania and Senegal maritime border. The FLNG facility is designed to provide circa 2.5 million metric tons per year on average. Total gas resources in the field are estimated to be about 15 trillion cubic feet. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed profile of the FLNG facility.

The development, the first major gas project to reach final investment decision (FID) in the basin, is slated to provide LNG for global exports, as well as for domestic markets.

The FPSO will accommodate 140 workers during normal operations. Built at a shipyard in China, the vessel travelled more than 12,000 nautical miles to arrive at the GTA site.

All told, the facility is 10 stories high, consists of more than 80,000 metric tons of steel and nearly 1,000 miles of cables.
