Summary

The proposed Alaska LNG facility reached an agreement with labor unions to employ Alaskan workers. Venture Global, meanwhile, is making strides with customers in Greece.

High Feed Gas Addresses High Commitments

Recent developments in the U.S. gas market, from Alaska to the Gulf Coast, indicate the pole position on liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports will endure amid pay and offtake agreements.

IIR Energy in its NATGAS Today report for Friday showed the amount of feed gas sent to export terminals for LNG were close to recent records near 19 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d).

"U.S. LNG feed gas nominations climbed above 18 Bcf/d today for the first time since April, reaching 18.2 Bcf/d as maintenance impacts continue to fade," said Maria Sanchez, a senior natural gas analyst at IIR Energy.

The U.S. is the world leader in LNG exports, and it's been largely insulated from conflict in the Middle East that sidelined production of the super-cooled gas from Qatar, another leader in LNG exports.

On Thursday, Venture Global said it expanded its existing sales and purchase agreement with Greek energy company Atlantic-SEE LNG Trade, a newly formed joint venture between Greek companies AKTOR Group and DEPA Commercial.

Under the terms of the agreement, Atlantic-SEE doubles its existing agreement with Venture Global to secure 1 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of gas in the liquid form over a 20-year period, starting in 2030.

Alexandros Exarchou, the chief executive officer of Atlantic-SEE, said the deal is a boon for energy security across Europe.

"It also highlights the growing importance of the transatlantic energy cooperation between Greece and the United States that will benefit the entire region," he said in a press release.

Apart from a deep bench in the U.S. LNG sector that includes the Plaquemines and Calcasieu Pass terminals, Venture Global said it's invested in regasification capacity at an import terminal for LNG in Alexandroupolis, Greece. With floating infrastructure, the company said this opens a new route for U.S.-sourced LNG to move into Europe.

LNG for Asia?

From the Pacific Coast, and potentially for markets in Asia, the developers behind the proposed Alaska LNG plant signed a memorandum of understanding with Alaskan labor unions that emphasizes hiring Alaskan workers for construction.

"Alaska LNG is expected to create 12,000 construction jobs, provide reliable, affordable natural gas for Alaskans, generate much-needed revenue for the state, and position Alaska as a competitive global LNG supplier," developer Glenfarne Alaska stated Thursday. "The project is also estimated to create up to 1,000 long-term jobs in operations." Japanese energy companies JERA and Tokyo Gas are among the major companies so far securing offtake from Alaska LNG. Australian services company Worley will offer engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services for Phase I development. Readers can learn more from a detailed plant profile and project report.

The first phase would include a 739-mile, 42-inch pipeline that would be constructed in four sections, with potential tie-backs to existing midstream infrastructure. It will be difficult to build a pipeline, however, given the construction window in Alaska is narrowed by a warming climate, as special infrastructure is needed when the ground thaws.

Phase II would add on coastal infrastructure that would be able to produce 20 MTPA for potential exports to Asia.
