General Contractor Selected for Basin Electric's Leland Olds Scrubber Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Bismarck, North Dakota) has selected one of the leading construction service firms in the U.S., Alberici Constructors Incorporated (St. Louis, Missouri), to construct a $200 million wet scrubber project at the company's Leland Olds Power Station (Stanton, North Dakota).

The lignite-fired facility is Basin Electric's first power plant and was named after former Federal Power Commission chairman, Leland Olds.

Commercial operation of the station started in 1966. It is composed of a General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) and an Alstom steam turbine/generator, with two Babcock & Wilcox opposed/cyclone-fired boilers.

Construction on the scrubbers started in the fall of 2007, with completion and tie-ins planned on Unit 2 in 2009 and Unit 1 in 2010.

Babcock Power is designing and supplying the two scrubbers, with Sargent & Lundy Limited Liability Company providing engineering services.
