Summary

Google and Intersect Power formally announced construction of the Meitner Energy Center in Texas--a co-located data center and power-generation site. According to Industrial Info Resources data, Google has more than $160 billion worth of active and planned U.S. data centers under construction, with $21 billion worth of projects under construction.

Meitner Energy Center

Google and Intersect Power on June 4 formally announced construction of its Meitner Energy Center in Texas--a co-located data center and energy generation site. Although work on the data center began late last year, the announcement comes after the formal closing of Google parent Alphabet Incorporated's acquisition of Intersect in March.

According to Industrial Info Resources data, Google has more than $160 billion worth of active and planned U.S. data center construction, with $21 billion worth of projects under construction. Missouri followed by Texas lead all states in terms of investment.

Intersect's operations will remain independent. For more information, see January 2, 2026, article - Google Acquires Intersect Power Specializing in Large Solar Plants, BESS.

The four planned Meitner data center buildings will require up to 840 megawatts (MW) of power and are located near Pampa in Gray County, about 60 miles northeast of Amarillo, while the power-generation sites will be in both Gray County and nearby Roberts County.

"This investment is built on a commitment to deliver data centers the right way, through responsibly increasing local energy capacity, using air-cooling to limit water consumption, and supporting thousands of jobs in the region," the companies said in a joint press release. It will support end-uses such as Search, Gmail, Maps, Cloud, online banking, and 911 systems.

The data center--which began construction late last year--will be powered by more than one gigawatt of wind, solar and battery storage, the companies said. Industrial Info Resources is tracking the overall Meitner Energy Center project with an investment value of approximately $14 billion, although Google has not disclosed a specific amount.

Google Data Centers in Texas

The tech giant has a major presence in Texas, which includes two new data center campuses in Haskell County--one under construction and another under development--and another planned for Armstrong County.

Google also is in the process of expanding its campus in Midlothian, about 25 miles southwest of Dallas, by adding a fifth data center building. Readers can view the project report.

Last year, Google announced a $40 billion investment in Texas through 2027.

Missouri Leads the Way

But it's Missouri that leads all states for Google's active and planned data center construction. This includes a $10 billion, five-building data center campus in Kansas City ("Project Mica") designed to require up to 700 MW of power. Construction of the first two buildings is underway, and the three subsequent buildings could wrap up by the end of 2028. Readers can view the related project reports.

Google also has announced plans for a two-building campus in New Florence, which could begin construction next year.
