Great River Energy Begins Construction on $90 Million Peaking Project in Minnesota

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Great River Energy (Elk River, Minnesota) has started site preparation on a $90 million, 175-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Elk River Generation Station.

Construction began in late June, and full commercial operation is anticipated for summer 2009. The project consists of adding a 175-MW Siemens Power Generation (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) SGT6 5000F combustion turbine to the facility. The unit will operate in simple-cycle peaking capacity to supply power when energy demands are at their highest, which is during the summer and winter months. The primary fuel for the new unit will be natural gas with ultra-low-sulfur fuel oil used as a backup. Elk River currently has a generating capacity of about 44 MW, which will be boosted to nearly 220 MW after the expansion is complete.

Harris Companies (St. Paul, Minnesota) will provide the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.
