Horizon Wind Completes $300 Million Expansion Project at Illinois Windfarm

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Horizon Wind Energy LLC (Houston,Texas), a subsidiary of Energias de Portugal S.A. (OTC:EDPFY) (Lisbon, Portugal), has completed construction and commenced commercial operation of a $300 million, 198-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the Twin Groves windfarm in Bloomington, Illinois.

Construction for the project started in June 2007 and was completed in the fall. Horizon has commenced full commercial start-up of 103 out of the 120 generators. Commissioning of these units began in late December 2007 and will continue through February 2008. The project consisted of adding additional 120 Vestas Wind Systems V82 1.65-MW wind turbine generators to the existing facility, boosting the windfarms generating capacity to a total of nearly 400 MW, which is enough to power up to 120,000 homes.

M.A. Mortenson (Minneapolis, Minnesota) provided the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the project. White Construction Incorporated (Clinton, Indiana) acted as the general contractor.
