Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hurricane Beryl is tearing its way through the Caribbean and made landfall on Grenada's Carriacou Island on Monday morning as a Category 4 storm. The National Hurricane Center warns Beryl is expected to bring "life-threatening winds and storm surge" to islands in the area, with Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula likely to be affected in the coming days. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$27.4 billion worth of active projects in the Mexican states that are most likely to be affected by Beryl, and more than US$1.3 billion worth in the Caribbean countries in or near the hurricane's path: Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Grenada, Jamaica and Martinique.

Beryl is the second named storm to threaten the Gulf of Mexico in this early stage of the 2024 hurricane season. "This hurricane, like Tropical Storm Alberto in June, seems likely to spare any major refining, oil, gas or power assets, as the current path suggests the storm will remain in the southernmost region of the Gulf of Mexico, the Bay of Campeche," said Trey Hamblet, Industrial Info's vice president of research for the Chemical Industry.
Current projections say the hurricane could cut through the Yucatan Peninsula before hitting the Bay of Campeche, which is just north of the state of Tabasco. That's where Petroleos Mexicanos SA de CV (Pemex) (Mexico City) is constructing its US$18 billion Dos Bocas Olmeca Refinery in the city of Paraiso, which is designed to produce 170,000 barrels per day of gasoline and 120,000 barrels per day of diesel via 17 processing units. After years of delays, the refinery started producing commercial fuel in the first quarter, and is expected to be fully completed by the end of the year.
It is not yet known how, or if, Beryl will affect the refinery's construction. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Petroleum Refining Project and Plant databases can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.
Other major energy-related projects in the area include Comisión Federal de Electricidad's (CFE) (Mexico City) US$762 million addition of a combined-cycle block at its Central Carrillo Puerto Power Plant in Valladolid, Yucatan. The 2-on-1 block is expected to raise the facility's total capacity from 280 to 1,300 megawatts (MW). The project started construction in September 2022 and is expected to wrap up in the first quarter of 2025. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report and plant profile.

Jamaica accounts for most of the active and planned project spending of the Caribbean countries in or near Beryl's path, the highest-valued of which is a US$300 million bamboo pulp mill in Frome, Westmoreland Parish. Bamboo Bioproducts Limited (Kingston, Jamaica), a joint venture among Jamaica Promotions Corporations, Delta Capital Partners Limited and Sugar Company of Jamaica Holding Limited, aims to process 1 million tons per year of green bambusa vulgaris to produce 250,000 tons per year of high-quality softwood pulp for paper production.
