Illinois has attracted a number of big-ticket industrial projects, whether for power generation, coal mining or other heavy industrial manufacturing sectors. Eighty-six projects have a total investment value (TIV) of $100 million or greater. Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) has more than $1 billion worth of renewable energy projects under construction in Illinois, including the $410 million California Ridge windfarm, the $480 million Bishop Hill wind energy center, and the Grand Ridge solar power project.
Sixty projects totaling $8.8 billion are currently under construction in the state. For example, Prairie State Generating Company LLC, owned by a consortium of U.S. Midwest public power agencies and Peabody Energy (NYSE:BTU) (St. Louis, Missouri), is about 95% complete with construction of the Prairie State Energy Campus in Marissa, Illinois. The 1,600-megawatt mine-mouth power plant is one of the only U.S. coal-fired projects to get approval and reach construction in recent history. Commissioning and startup activities are under way and full commissioning is expected by June 2012. Industrial Info has been tracking the project since 2001. The project began construction in 2007 after a lengthy permitting process. The cost of the state-of-the-art supercritical coal project, which includes a dedicated underground coal mine, more than tripled from $1.5 billion in 2001 to the current $5 billion. Bechtel Group (Frederick, Maryland) is the engineering and construction firm working on the project.
