Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ind-Barath Energies (Utkal) Limited (Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh) is constructing the 700-megawatt (MW), $787.5 million power plant in Sahajbahal in the Jharsuguda district of Orissa. The first 350-MW unit is likely to be brought online by the end of the 2010-11 fiscal year.

The power plant will have two circulating fluidized bed boilers, each with a capacity of 223 tonnes per hour, which were sourced from Cethar Vessels Limited Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu).

About 14,700 tonnes coal per day will be required per day to run the plant at full capacity. Coal will be sourced from the Belpahar coalfields of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, which are in the Sambalpur region of Madhya Pradesh.

The water requirement for the power plant has been estimated at 65,760 cubic meters per day, which will be sourced from the adjacent Mahanadi River through pipeline.

Having signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government in February 2009, Ind-Barath Energies is confident of completing both units before March 2012.

Speaking to Electrical Monitor, Gangadhar Reddy, a senior project official, exuded confidence, saying that the first unit would be commissioned by November 2011 and the second unit by March 2012. "We also plan to add a third supercritical unit of 660-MW to the original plan. We have signed an MoU with the Orissa government to this effect," Reddy said about future plans. Construction is well under way, with work on the foundation currently in progress, he explained. Regarding power offtake, the official noted that Orissa government would be given 12% of the power generated at concessional rates.

Ind-Barath Energy has also proposed to set up a 20-MW biomass power plant at Chiplima near Sambalpur. The plant will be constructed on a 40-acres plot. The company has already presented a proposal to the state government owned Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Orissa Limited and the Orissa Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) for the project. The project will generate direct employment for 150 people and provide indirect employment to 300 others.
