India Plans Grid Expansion to Enable 900 GW Renewable Capacity

India is planning a massive expansion of its transmission infrastructure, targeting an additional 137,500 circuit kilometers (ckm) of lines and 827,600 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of substation capacity to support 900 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel capacity by fiscal years 2035-2036.

Researched by IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)--India is planning a massive expansion of its transmission infrastructure, targeting an additional 137,500 circuit kilometers (ckm) of lines and 827,600 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of substation capacity to support 900 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel capacity by fiscal years 2035-2036. The program is part of a broader strategy by the Central Electricity Authority to enable large-scale renewable energy integration and meet rising power demand.

The plan includes major initiatives such as the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) programs, with GEC-II already integrating about 20 GW and the proposed GEC-III expected to facilitate over 134 GW of renewable capacity plus pumped hydro and battery storage systems. Key renewables-rich states like Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka would see significant grid strengthening to evacuate solar and wind power, alongside the development of ultra-high-voltage corridors to handle bulk transmission and support green hydrogen hubs and industrial loads.

The grid expansion is critical as India's electricity demand is projected to surge, with peak demand expected to reach 459 GW and annual consumption rising to 3,365 billion units by fiscal year 2036. The strengthened transmission network will also integrate storage solutions and hybrid renewable systems, ensuring grid stability while accelerating the country's transition toward a high-renewable energy mix.
