Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas--India is set to make a substantial investment of US$109.5 billion to expand and modernize its power transmission infrastructure under the National Electricity Plan (NEP) 2023-2032. This ambitious plan aims to increase the transmission network from 485,000 circuit kilometers (ckm) in 2024 to 648,000 ckm by 2032, with the transformation capacity projected to nearly double from 1,251 gigavolt amps (GVA) to 2,342 GVA.
As part of the transition, the country's transmission capacity of 2,530 GVA will be scaled significantly through the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) system, a preferred model for transparency and cost-efficiency that now handles over 90% of transmission projects under public-private partnerships (PPPs).
Additionally, 50 gigawatts (GW) of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) capacity has been sanctioned to support renewable energy integration, specifically to evacuate 280 GW of variable renewable energy (VRE) by 2030. This investment responds to India's surging energy demands and aims to accommodate a 458-GW peak demand by 2032, driven by population growth, renewable energy goals, and the need for infrastructure modernization.
