Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SK Hynix (Seoul, South Korea) recently said it plans to build a high-dollar semiconductor plant in Indiana, where Industrial Info is tracking $28 billion worth of active and planned Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects. About $13 billion of the spend is attributed to automotive projects, with most of the spend linked to the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

SK Hynix's approximately $4 billion West Lafayette Semiconductor Memory Chips plant will produce high bandwidth memory chips, which are critical components of artificial intelligence (AI) processing. In an April 3 press release, the company said it plans to begin mass production in the second half of 2028. Construction is planned to kick off next year. The company held an investment agreement ceremony earlier this month with local, state and government officials, including Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Arati Prabhakar and Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb (R): "Indiana is a global leader in innovating and producing the products that will power our future economy, and today's news is proof positive to that fact," Holcomb said."

Industrial Info is tracking other high-dollar manufacturing projects across Indiana, including three major EV battery plants already under construction. General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) (GM) (Detroit, Michigan) is partnering with Samsung SDI to construct a $3.5 billion EV battery cell plant in New Carlisle, which is designed to house production lines to build nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells at a capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year and increase GM's total U.S. battery cell capacity to about 160 GWh when in full production. Construction is expected to wrap up in late 2027. Click here to read more information.

Samsung SDI is a joint venture partner in two other EV battery projects, aligning with Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) (Hoofddorp, Netherlands). The companies are constructing a 20-building, 3.3 million-square-foot complex in Kokomo with a planned annual production capacity of 23 GWh of EV batteries and, at an adjoining site, another manufacturing facility with a capacity of 34 GWh per year. The projects are expected to wrap up in mid-2025 and mid-2027, respectively. The batteries will be used to produce EVs at Stellantis' North American assembly plants. The automotive sector is at the forefront of Indiana's Industrial Manufacturing project activity, but the data centers sector comes in second with $6.2 billion in spending. That includes an $800 million investment from Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) to build a 700,000-square-foot data center campus in Jeffersonville. Site preparation is expected to begin in June, with the data center operational in 2026. Subscribers can click here to read the related project reports.

Based on the company's investment plans, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) offered Meta a 35-year term data center sales tax exemption for a minimum $800 million in eligible capital.

The Industrial Manufacturing Industry also includes the warehousing and distribution sector, which is a focus of e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Amazon expects construction of its grassroot robotic fulfillment center in Elkhart will wrap up this summer. The facility will feature a five-story, 4 million-square-foot building to pick, pack and ship smaller items such as books, electronics and other consumer goods.
