India's BHEL Develops International Alliances to Obtain Larger Nuclear Turbine Contracts

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The associations and alliances between Indian companies in the power sector, utilities in other energy sectors and international nuclear sector companies are continuing to develop an interlinked and overlapping matrix of nuclear skills and manufacturing capacity.

India's state-controlled power plant equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BSE:500103) (BHEL) (New Delhi) is currently part of a joint venture with the state's Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) (Mumbai) and Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Paris, France), with a view to expanding overseas markets for its 700-megawatt (MW) reactors.

BHEL is now looking to extend its international connections with other nuclear reactor suppliers for possible cooperation in the manufacturing of components for larger reactors.

In January 2011, BHEL signed a memorandum of understanding with GE-Hitachi (Wilmington, North Carolina) for possible cooperation in manufacturing components for reactors of 1,000 MW and above.

Then, in February 2011 the company signed the memorandum of understanding with NPCIL and Alstom. This has resulted in orders for the manufacture and supply of steam turbine generator packages in a consortium with Alstom for two 700-MW units for NPCIL's Kakrapar units 3 and 4. The supply contract covers the manufacturing and supply of the steam turbines, balance of equipment, and erection and commissioning. BHEL will manufacture steam turbine components based on manufacturing drawings supplied by Alstom.
