Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Windfarms are being built at astounding rates in Iowa, after MidAmerican Energy Company (Des Moines, Iowa), a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKA) (Omaha, Nebraska), was granted authority by the state to install 448 wind turbines in five counties as part of five projects.
Siemens Corporation, a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI), received an order from MidAmerican Energy for the wind turbines and wind turbine blades.
Construction has begun at all five project sites in Iowa. Each wind turbine will have a rotor diameter of 108 meters and will have a maximum power output of 2.3 megawatts (MW).
Siemens also will provide service and maintenance on the equipment for an unspecified period. The combined facilities make MidAmerican one of the largest producers of renewable electrical energy in the region and in the U.S. The projects will take two years to complete, and all are expected to go online and be commercially operational by the end of 2015.
The wind turbines will be installed in Grundy, Madison, Marshall, O'Brien and Webster counties. The total investment is approximately $1.9 billion.
The U.S. Production Tax Credit (PTC) expires today. Projects in the U.S. will not be able to receive PTC tomorrow or later, unless they have met the criteria set forth by the U.S. government.
