Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). As project owners seek out a skilled workforce to implement a growing number of industrial projects in the Southeastern U.S., signatory contractors to the Iron Workers Union are experiencing a spike in bidding opportunities. A recent project award for the Iron Workers highlights improving conditions for union workers in the Southeastern industrial market. The Iron Workers Local 601 in Charleston, South Carolina will supply a minimum of thirty iron workers for the four to five months that it will take to erect 3,000 tons of structural steel for the new Vought Aircraft fuselage manufacturing plant in Charleston.
"Steel erection on this fast-track project will start this week," according to Dana Whitlow, Vice President of Williams Erection Company (Smyrna, Georgia). Williams Erection, a signatory contractor for the Iron Worker Managment Progressive Action Cooperative Trust (I.M.P.A.C.T.) and P.R.I.M.E. programs, was awarded the steel erection portion of the job from steel supplier South Carolina Steel, who was awarded the steel supply contract from design-build firm, Suitt Construction (Greenville, South Carolina).
Vought Aircraft Industries Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) began site work during the first quarter of 2005 on a new 480,000 square foot plant that will manufacture fuselage sections for Boeings new 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The $600 million project is a boon to the local economy and is projected to employ 1,000, once operations begin in 2006.
This is one of a multitude of new industrial projects scheduled to begin construction in the Southeastern U.S. The Iron Workers have initiated the Program for Regional Industry Market Expansion (P.R.I.M.E.) to develop relationships with contractors and alert them to growing industrial opportunities. In a partnership with leading industrial intelligence provider, Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated (Houston, Texas), P.R.I.M.E. provides contractors with valuable plant and project information, available at significantly discounted prices, according to Philip Lee, Business Manager for Iron Workers Local 601.
"It's the most comprehensive list of projects I've ever seen. Signatory contractors receive a significant discount by accessing the service through IMPACT Direct," Lee said. "We've seen increased bidding activity since weve started using it."
Currently, there are ten Iron Worker locals participating in P.R.I.M.E. from three Iron Worker district councils: Southeastern, Tennessee Valley, and Mid-Atlantic, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The P.R.I.M.E. program is just another benefit that IMPACT is offering to signatory contractors.
