Isaias Forecast to Become First Hurricane of 2026 as Gulf Energy Risks Rise

Written by Aaron Studwell, Ph.D., Energy Meteorologist & Analyst for IIR News Intelligence (Sugar Land, Texas)

Summary

Rapid intensification, offshore evacuations and growing flood risks put Gulf energy infrastructure and the northern Gulf Coast on alert.

Gulf Storm Strengthens

Tropical Storm Isaias continues to strengthen this morning as hurricane and storm surge watches were issued for portions of the northern U.S. Gulf Coast.

As of 10 a.m. Central Time on Wednesday, Isaias was centered about 540 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (mph). Rapid intensification is still in the forecast with Isaias expected to become a hurricane Thursday and peak near 110 mph over the central Gulf early Friday.

A hurricane watch is now in effect from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to Indian Pass, Florida, while a storm surge watch extends from the mouth of the Mississippi River eastward to Yankeetown, Florida.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center forecasts peak storm surge of 5 to 7 feet from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to Indian Pass, Florida, including Mobile Bay, Alabama. From the Mississippi River eastward to Ocean Springs and from Indian Pass to the Aucilla River, storm surge is expected to range from 3 to 5 feet.

For Gulf energy interests, the combination of rapid strengthening, an expanding wind field near landfall and a track across the central Gulf raises risks to offshore production, marine operations, coastal refining, and power infrastructure.

Operators have already begun precautionary evacuations. BP, Shell, and Chevron are removing non-essential personnel from their Gulf platforms. An updated report will be issued at 1 p.m. Central Time this afternoon by the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE).

Forecast guidance shifted east overnight; the NHC favors a path toward the Alabama-western Florida Panhandle region, although forecast confidence remains below average. Guidance still shows meaningful east-west and timing differences.

Increasing shear late in the forecast may weaken Isaias somewhat before landfall, but a significant hurricane is still expected at landfall. Because the cyclone is also forecast to accelerate and expand as it interacts with the approaching trough, wind and rainfall impacts could extend well east of the eventual center track.

Heavy rain will become an expanding hazard well inland. Guidance forecasts 3-6 inches with localized totals to 10 inches along parts of the northern Gulf Coast. A moderate risk of excessive rainfall is in effect for far southern Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle Friday. Flooding threats then spread into the Tennessee Valley, southern Appalachians, Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic through the weekend and into early next week.
