Summary

The U.S. Department of Energy approved a $5.1 billion loan package for Alliant Energy to expand power generation in Iowa and Wisconsin. Industrial Info Resources is tracking $8.5 billion worth of projects from Alliant Energy.

DOE's Loan

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) said its $5.1 billion loan package to Alliant Energy will add more than 2.6 gigawatts (GW) of new or upgraded power generation capacity in Iowa and Wisconsin. Industrial Info Resources data show $8.5 billion worth of projects from Alliant Energy, most of which are in the pre-construction phases.

"The investments will support new natural gas-fired power plants, energy storage systems, and upgrades to existing generation facilities," the agency said in a press release. In a separate statement, Alliant Energy said with access to the funding, it "may pursue," but is not limited to, the following:
  • 1.6 GW of new natural gas generation
  • 240 megawatts (MW) increased capacity at existing natural gas facilities
  • 1 GW of energy storage
  • 2 billion cubic feet of liquified natural gas storage

Alliant Energy's Projects

The company's September investor presentation noted a $13.4 billion capital-spending plan from 2026 through 2029, including $4.1 billion for natural gas generation and $5 billion for energy storage and renewables.

In August, the company received the final air quality permit approval from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for a new natural gas-fired plant, paving the way for starting construction of the Bobcat Energy Center in Marshalltown, Iowa. The company anticipates commercial operation in 2029.

As a peaking plant, the plant will "serve as a flexible resource, activating as needed during periods of peak demand," according to Alliant's website. "Designed for rapid response, the facility will start and reach full load in less than 15 minutes." In wind power, Alliant has received approval from state regulators for construction of its 153-MW Bent Tree North wind farm in Freeborn County, Minnesota, to be built next to its existing 200-MW Bent Tree wind farm. Alliant also is developing a grassroot 200-MW wind farm in Franklin County, Iowa.
