Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Pilbara region of northwest Western Australia, where CITIC Pacific Mining's (Perth) huge Sino Iron project is under construction, is a dry area on the world's driest continent. The US$3.5 billion magnetite iron ore mine will also process the ore into ore concentrate and pellets that will go to Chinese steel mills. This process requires a great deal of fresh water. Because there is precious little fresh water in the Pilbara, CITIC Pacific Mining will 'make' fresh water for the Sino Iron project in a new desalination plant.
Enter IDE Technologies Limited (Kadima, Israel). IDE has installed more than 380 large-scale, land-based desalination plants in more than 40 countries. The company has been awarded the design and supply contract by CITIC Pacific Mining for a 51-gigalitre desalination plant, which has an estimated total investment value of $320 million.
The current strategy for this project entails shipping proprietary equipment from Israel to China. In China, the desalination plant will be constructed in modules with the equipment. The modules will then be barged to CITIC's newly constructed wharf at the Cape Preston site. The modules will be shipped in order of construction to minimise handling, then off-loaded and transported with specialised heavy-lift equipment and placed in situ, ready for connection.
The Sino iron Project has access to more than 2 billion tonnes of measured, indicated and inferred magnetite ore and, when operational, will be one of the world's largest mines.
