Largest Solar Project in Colorado Begins Commercial Operations

The largest solar farm east of the Rockies has begun commercial operations.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The largest solar project in Colorado, the 120-megawatt (MW) Comanche Solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, achieved commercial operations last month following its completion by SunEdison (NYSE:SUNE) (Maryland Heights, Missouri) and Renewable Energy Systems Americas Incorporated (RES) (Broomfield, Colorado). Located about two miles southeast of Pueblo, the power facility is the largest solar farm east of the Rocky Mountains.

SunEdison acquired the project earlier this year from Community Energy Incorporated (Radnor, Pennsylvania). The project features more than 450,000 mono-crystalline PV modules, utilizing single-axis tracking technology to provide enough power for more than 31,000 homes and businesses. The project is located on 900 acres of agricultural land. The power will be sold under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Xcel Energy Incorporated (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota).

Project construction began in July 2015 and took more than a year to complete. RES employed over 300 construction workers at the peak of construction earlier this year. The plant has five full-time operating positions. The project had a total investment value of $200 million. SunEdison is responsible of operation and maintenance of the solar farm.

SunEdison filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April. For related information, see September 15, 2016, article - SunEdison Sells Major Wind, Solar Projects to NRG Energy After Bankruptcy.
