Among Mortenson's biggest projects is one that, after several years, is approaching the finish line: a light rail project in the Seattle, Washington, area. The Northgate Link light rail extension involves extending the light rail system 4.3 miles north from the University of Washington to the urban village of Northgate. The project entails creating two 3.6-mile, twin-bored tunnels connected by 23 cross-passages, two underground stations and one elevated station. Mortenson is the general contractor on the $2 billion-plus project, which kicked off in 2014 and is expected to wrap up later this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Another large project involving Mortenson spans the U.S. and Canadian border. The Lake Erie Connector project is a power T&D project that would carry 1,000 megawatts (MW) of power bidirectionally both underground and under Lake Erie between the grid of the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator in Canada and the U.S.' PJM Interconnection grid in Pennsylvania. The project is being developed by ITC Holdings (Novi, Michigan), a subsidiary of Fortis Incorporated (NYSE:FTS) (St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador). It is expected to kick off later this year for completion in 2024. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Other Mortenson projects include data centers, notably for Facebook Incorporated (NASDAQ:FB) (Menlo Park, California). Mortenson is at work on facilities for the company in De Kalb, Illinois, and Eagle Mountain, Utah, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City. The De Kalb project involves constructing two data center buildings totaling more than 970,000 square feet. The project kicked off last year and is expected to be completed in first-quarter 2022. Construction on the Eagle Mountain project, which is similar in scope to the De Kalb project, kicked off in the summer of 2018 and is expected to be completed this quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the De Kalb and Eagle Mountain projects.
Mortenson also is known as a leading constructor of renewable energy projects. While its wind projects outnumber other forms of energy, one of its highest-value renewable projects is a solar farm in Texas. Construction on Onpeak Power's (Austin, Texas) Greasewood solar photovoltaic plant near Imperial in West Texas kicked off early last year. The 347-MW project is being constructed in three phases, the first of which was expected to be completed recently, the second completed this quarter and the third by the end of this year. The project has an estimated total investment value of $500 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Mortenson also has numerous wind projects in Texas and other locales, such as the Escalade windfarm near Gilliland, Texas, about 200 miles from both Dallas and Amarillo. Construction on the 336-MW windfarm began last summer, with an expected duration of approximately one year. The facility will use 65 wind turbines ranging between 4.2 MW and 5.6 MW. Mortenson is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
