Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Meadwestvaco Corporation (NYSE: MWV) (Stamford, Connecticut) is planning a major outage this Fall, at its kraft pulp and paper mill in Wickliffe, Kentucky. The company has scheduled a seven-day maintenance shutdown in November. Apart from routine inspection and maintenance activities, the company is currently in the pre-construction phase of a paper machine modification project that will be completed during the outage. Key among the modifications will be the installation of a new calender stack and upgrades to the winder and broke system.
Operations at the Wickliffe site began in 1968, under the ownership of Westvaco Corporation. In 2001, Mead Corporation and Westvaco Corporation announced plans to merge in a transaction that carried a $10 billion value. The mill employs 600 workers and is comprised of chip handling operations, kraft pulp processing, including bleaching and chemical recovery, pulp drying operations, a single paper machine, off-machine coater, and power plant. The mill produces over 400 tons-a-day of flash-dried market pulp and approximately 650 tons-a-day of paper, including coated and uncoated offset, envelope, and web offset.
MeadWestvaco Corporation is a leading global producer of packaging, coated and specialty papers, consumer and office products, and specialty chemicals. Among the principal markets it serves are the automotive, beverage, consumer products, healthcare, media and entertainment, and publishing industries.
