Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Six million gloves per year. That's how many nitrile gloves a plant that is under construction in Tuskegee, Alabama, will begin producing when it is up and running later this year. The plant is one of more than 300 active U.S. projects being tracked by Industrial Info in the medical devices, equipment and instruments sector, and it's one of seven projects involving medical glove production being followed by IIR in the U.S., demonstrating the granularity of IIR's coverage of this sector, which encompasses a variety of devices and tools, ranging from tapes and films to surgical devices. Unlike the research and development side of the Pharma-Biotech Industry, which although present throughout the U.S. shows a strong concentration of activity in the Northeast and New England, projects for the manufacture of medical devices are less regionally concentrated, showing the strongest spending in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast market regions of the U.S.

One of the largest of these tracked projects is squarely within these locations in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, northeast of Atlanta. Da Vinci (Sunnyvale, California) manufactures a range of robotic devices and software used in surgical and other medical applications, often aimed at performing procedures beyond those capable with a normal human hand. The company is expanding its campus in Peachtree Corners by renovating and equipping buildings totaling 500,000 square feet not only to boost production, but also to provide additional space for physician training and administration. General contractor DPR Construction (Redwood City, California) broke ground on the project in mid-2022 and is expected to wrap up this first phase of expansion this summer. A second round of expansion also is already underway, providing another 250,000 square feet of space. This portion of the project is expected to be completed in 2025. Subscribers can learn more on the Da Vinci projects by viewing the project reports on Phase I and Phase II.

In South Dakota, 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) (Saint Paul, Minnesota) also has launched a Phase I expansion for its plant in Brookings. The three-year project entails adding 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space and wet labs, along with new loading docks and warehouse slots for the plant's production of medical tapes, films and dressings. The project is expected to be completed toward the end of 2026. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

Autoinjector pens have been a literal life-saver for people suffering from anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reaction. Meridian Medical Technologies, part of Kindeva Drug Delivery Company (Woodbury, Minnesota), is renovating a facility in Bridgeton, Missouri, to allow for the production of autoinjector pens. Kindeva itself was formerly part of 3M, before being purchased by Altaris Capital Partners LLC (New York, New York) in 2020. Kindeva operates as a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), providing products for other companies. The Bridgeton project has been underway since last summer and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

More traditional drug-delivery components are the aim of a plant undergoing an expansion in Kinston, North Carolina. West Pharmaceutical Services Incorporated (Exton, Pennsylvania) is expanding its 200,000-square-foot facility in Kinton by 55,000 square feet and adding equipment to increase the production of rubber intravenous drug delivery components and syringe plungers . Design-build firm Horst Construction (Lancaster County, Pennsylvania) began construction in 2022 and is expected to wrap it up in the fourth quarter of this year. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
