Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--During November, Mexico's state-owned power utility Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) awarded two engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts worth more than $1.4 billion.
CFE completed a tendering process that started last August for the repowering and modernization of nine hydro power plants, awarding a $893 million contract to a consortium formed by the local branch of Andritz AG (Austria), Andritz SA de CV, and the local companies Generadores Mexicanos SA de CV (Genermex), Hydroproject de Mexico SA de CV and Sistemas de Energia Internacional SA de CV (SEISA). The contract scope is to replace or modernize 31 hydro units with individual capacities between 45 megawatts (MW) and 215 MW, in order to extend their use life and operational efficiency and increase their aggregated generation capacity by almost 290 MW. This project is planned to be executed between mid-2022 and late 2026. The second EPC contract was for $542 million and awarded to Finnish Wärtsilä Corporation for the construction of two natural-gas fired peaking plants in northern Mexico with an aggregated capacity of 566 MW: a 390-MW plant in Mexicali (Baja California) with Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fired technology, and a 176-MW plant in San Luis Rio Colorado (Sonora) using Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fired technology. The first plant is due to start operations during summer 2022, and the second by mid-2023. Subscribers can click here for the project reports.
CFE also is conducting, with delays in the original schedule, international tenders for the construction of six combined-cycle plants with an aggregated capacity close to 4.5 gigawatts (GW), and has plans to call for tender, between the end of the year and the first months of 2022, for the construction of the 120-MW first phase of the 1-GW Puerto Peñasco Solar Photovoltaic Complex in the Sonora desert.
