MidAmerican Energy Begins Commercial Operation of Greater Des Moines Energy Center

Reaseached by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Inoporated; Houston, Texas). MidAmerican Energy Company, a subsidiary of the MidAmerican Energy Holding Company (Des Moines, Iowa) began commercial operation of the Greater Des Moines Energy Center. Greater Des Moines is a 540 megawatt (MW) combined cycle energy station located at the former site of the Des Moines Power Station, which is in Pleasant Hill, Iowa in Polk County.

As a combined cycle energy center, Greater Des Moines consists of two Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation W501FD combustion turbines and a Toshiba steam turbine to generate power. The first phase of the station construction, two combustion turbines, was completed ahead of schedule and began commercial operation the first week of May. This will allow the station to help with the increasing summer and winter demands by producing 350 MW of power right away. The second phase, a 190 MW steam turbine is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2004.

MidAmerican Energy Company awarded the owner's engineering contract to the Lenexa, Kansas based, Bibb and Associates. Bibb and Associates is a multidisciplinary engineering and architecture firm uniquely positioned to provide the highest level of quality and integrity of service in the power, architecture, process and industrial industries.

The general construction contract was awarded to the Omaha, Nebraska based Peter Kiewit Sons, Incorporated. As a highly diversified construction and mining organization Peter Kiewit Sons, Incorporated offers experience in all construction segments with more than 30 district and area offices in the United States and Canada.
