The Atlanta, Georgia based Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG) has commenced full commercial operation of the $290 Million Wansley Combined-Cycle Unit 9 located in Roopville, Georgia in Heard County. This new plant was installed at the existing coal-fired Wansley Power Station owned by Southern Company subsidiary of Georgia Power Company (Atlanta, Georgia). (Plant 1054067, PEC 17001400)
Construction for the new power project started in August 2002 and was completed in early 2004 and MEAG commenced full commercial operation of the project the end of April 2004. Wansley Power Station operates in a 2-on-1 combined cycle configuration that consists of two 170 megawatt (MW) natural gas fired GE Power Systems MS7001FA PG7241 (FA) combustion turbine generators, two Nooter/Eriksen heat recovery steam generators equipped with duct burners, and a 200MW GE Power Systems condensing D11 steam turbine generator, all of which is capable of generating a total of 520MW of reliable power for MEAG's growing customers in the Southeast region's whole sale market.
Utility Engineering Corporation (UE) headquartered in Denver, Colorado performed the engineering duties for the project. BE&K Construction based in Birmingham, Alabama acted as the general contractor for the project.
