Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Louisville Gas and Electric (Louisville, Kentucky) (LG&E), Kentucky's largest electric power utility, announced that a new natural gas-powered unit at the Cane Run Generating Station was brought online last month. LG&E is part of PPL Corporation (NYSE:PPL) (Allentown, Pennsylvania).
The unit is a combined-cycle turbine, which generates electricity with gas turbines and recycles exhaust heat to generate steam and produce additional electricity.
The 640-megawatt (MW) unit will replace coal-burning units that were built in the 1950s. The coal-burning units are being decommissioned.
The new gas-powered unit was projected to cost $563 million, but came in $18 million under that that amount.
