Newmont Mining Proceeds with New Underground Gold Mine Construction in Nevada

Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM)(Denver, Colorado) is well underway with shaft sinking and construction for its Leeville underground gold mining project (PEC 48000203) located in Carlin, Nevada. Newmont selected Guy F Atkinson Construction LLC (Lakewood, Colorado), a subsidiary of Clark Construction Group, Incorporated (Bethesda, Maryland) to perform the shaft sinking and concrete work.

TIC (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) has completed construction for the initial hoisting and underground systems. A second round of surface facility and conveyor construction will be awarded in 2005 as the shaft sinking nears completion. Newmont will be responsible for awarding remaining construction contracts, which include some surface facilities, stacker conveyors, a 50-ton bin, and headframe structure.

Engineering and procurement for more than $180 million project was supplied by SNC Lavalin Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec). Underground shaft sinking and construction activities will continue into 2005 with surface facility construction in late 2005. Newmont plans to begin processing 3,500 tons per day of ore starting in January 2006.
