Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). North American gypsum wallboard producers are planning in excess of $1.8 billion in future capital expenditures mainly for capacity expansions to meet increasing demand. More than half of this spending is scheduled to occur in Eastern U.S. regions Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Most of new capacity planned will take advantage of byproduct synthetic gypsum from nearby power plants.
Two major gypsum wallboard manufacturers have recently started construction on new gypsum wallboard plants in the Carolinas. National Gypsum Company (Charlotte, North Carolina) broke ground last week on a $125 million synthetic gypsum wallboard plant in Mount Holly, North Carolina. When complete in the summer of 2007, the plant will receive synthetic gypsum feedstock from four area Duke Power electrical generating stations.
American Gypsum Company, a subsidiary of Eagle Materials, Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) began construction on a new grassroot synthetic wallboard plant in Georgetown, South Carolina. The $125 million plant is being engineered and constructed by Lockwood Greene, a wholly owned subsidiary of CH2M Hill (Englewood, Colorado). Construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2007.
In addition to these two projects, Industrial Info is tracking 39 gypsum wallboard plant projects, ranging from an $180 million expansion to a $1 million plant upgrade. For details, contact Industrial Info's Member Center at 1-800-762-3361.
