Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pulp and paper mills across North America have plans to invest nearly $600 million in black liquor recovery boiler projects over the next couple of years. Industrial Info has identified more than 60 capital and maintenance projects with project values ranging from $650,000 to $190 million. The scale of projects related to recovery boilers range from scheduled maintenance and rebuilding of boilers, to the addition of a new recovery boiler and a steam turbine generator.
Canada shows seven recovery boiler projects at mills that are valued at a total of $247 million, while the U.S. lists 54 projects valued at $350 million.
A detailed example of one of the many black liquor recovery boiler projects being tracked by Industrial Info is a project by International Paper. The company is planning a partial rebuild of the No. 2 recovery boiler at a paper mill in Louisiana. Key components of the project include rebuilding the lower furnace and replacing the tertiary superheater. The No. 2 recovery boiler, supplied by The Babcock & Wilcox Company (NYSE:BWC), started up in 1981 and is rated at 2.7 million pounds per day. Work on the $12 million project is scheduled for the spring of 2013.
A brief description of some of the other recovery boiler projects include an economizer replacement at a mill in Maryland; superheater and roof tube replacements at a mill in Alabama; and an air system retrofit of a boiler in Arkansas.
Industrial Info is tracking more than 900 capital and maintenance projects in the forest products industry worldwide that have an "active" status. The combined total investment value of all active projects is estimated at more than $65 billion.
