Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India's nuclear power utility NPCIL (Mumbai) has announced that it is planning a tenfold increase in the country's nuclear capacity over the next two decades. NPCIL currently has a number of projects in different stages of development, and now has an installed nuclear power generating capacity of 4,780 megawatts (MW).
S.K. Malhotra, head of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), said that seven reactors were under construction and the overall target was an additional 60,000 MW by 2032.
Malhotra said that the sector was meeting about 60% of required uranium supplies for India's nuclear power generation, while the remaining 40% was being imported. He added that the situation will improve after the Tummalapalle uranium mines in Andhra Pradesh begin operating at full capacity.
The objective, Mulhotra said, was to enhance nuclear power generation capacity to achieve 5,000 units of nuclear power per capita by 2050.
The 2,000-MW Kundankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu attained criticality this year, and the second unit at the site is expected to begin operations by June 2014. Four pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) of 700 MW each are under construction at Rawatbad in Rajasthan and Kakrapar in Gujarat, Mulhotra said.
