NRG Energy Completes Construction of $400 Million Power Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--NRG Texas LLC (Houston, Texas), a subsidiary of NRG Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey), has completed construction of the $400 million, 550-megawatt (MW) expansion project at its Cedar Bayou Power Station located in Baytown, Texas.

The expansion project, which is referred to as Unit 4 at the existing facility, is owned by both NRG (50%) and EnergyCo LLC (50%). EnergyCo LLC is a joint venture between PNM Resources Incorporated (NYSE:PNM) (Albuquerque, New Mexico) and Cascade Investment LLC (Kirkland, Washington).

Construction of the project began in the summer of 2007 and was completed earlier this spring. NRG commenced full commercial operation of the project this month. The project consisted of constructing a 2-on-1 combined cycle power island equipped with two 180-MW natural-gas-fired Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation SGT6-5000F W501FD combustion turbines, two Deltak Heat Recovery Steam Generators, and a single 200-MW steam turbine generator also manufactured by Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation. The new addition to the facility comes just in time to help meet peak summer demands for customers trying to beat the Texas heat.
