Official Ground Breaking Ceremony Held Last Week for Holcim’s Missouri Cement Project

Even though Bloomsdale Excavating Company (Bloomsdale, Missouri) has been on site performing site preparation since last year, Holcim (US) Incorporated, a subsidiary of Holcim Limited (Jona, Switzerland), held an official ground breaking ceremony last Friday. Attended by state and federal officials, as well as Holcim (US) CEO Patrick Dolberg, the ground breaking ceremony marks the official start of construction of the massive $600 million limestone quarry, cement plant, and Mississippi River harbor project, which will take three years to construct, employing 1,000 – 1,200 during the construction phase and about 200 after the project becomes operational in 2009.

Bloomsdale Excavating’s contract, which includes site preparation and excavation of the harbor is scheduled to be complete by January 2007, but additional work will begin in the latter half of 2006. Holcim will be releasing individual general contracts for harbor, plant and quarry construction beginning this summer.

On February 9, 2006, Holcim received approval from Sainte Genevieve County Commissioners for the last necessary permit, paving the way for construction of the project.
