OlyWest $200 Million Manitoba Hog Slaughtering Plant Delayed

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The opening of OlyWest’s (Winnipeg, Manitoba), a partnership between Olymel (Saint-Hyacynte, Quebec), Big Sky Farms (Humboldt, Saskatchewan) and Hytek (Winnipeg, Manitoba), hog rendering plant in a Saint Boniface Industrial Park in Winnipeg has been put on hold. Manitoba’s Clean Environment Commission has formally put on hold public hearings into OlyWest’s project after two of the proposal’s three partners pulled out.

Olymel and Big Sky Farms withdrew from the partnership, blaming in part a moratorium on new and expanding hog operations that the provincial government imposed. Therefore, because of their withdrawal, the Commission requested that OlyWest submit a revised business plan to the Manitoba government before public hearings on the proposal would begin. Even the Manitoba government now claims that it is waiting for the revised plan in order to confirm last year’s $20 million lending offer.

The project has been met with considerable opposition from some St. Boniface area businesses and residents. They have raised concerns about the plant’s possible effect on air and water quality, traffic flow and property values in the area.

Hytek Limited announced that is now assuming full control of the OlyWest food-processing proposal. If approved, the $200 million facility will the most modern, high-tech food processing plant of its kind in Canada and provide more than 1,000 jobs. As first reported by Industrial Info (IIR) in 2006, Earth Tech Incorporated (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was awarded the engineering design contract of the plant. IIR also detailed the scope of project, tentative schedule, and key contacts.

Data extracted from IIR’s Online Project Database reveals that since last year, the OlyWest project is among 50 active projects in the Food & Beverage Industry in Canada and estimated at approximately $900 million. Half of these projects have yet to kick-off.
