The leading industry in Ohio for industrial project spending, represented by construction starts in 2007, is the Industrial Manufacturing Industry with $1.4 billion, closely followed by the Power Industry with $1.3 billion and the Metals & Minerals Industry with $1.2 billion. After these three leaders are three other industries, which are experiencing significant project spending scheduled for 2007, including the Alternative Fuels Industry with $977 million, the Petroleum Refining Industry with $643 million, and the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry with $605 million.

The largest project on the books for Ohio is a plan by DaimlerChrysler Corporation (NYSE:DCX ) (Auburn Hills, Michigan) to retool an automotive machining plant in Perrysville, Ohio. The $700 million project, which is scheduled to begin construction this year, will involve converting from steering column and torque converter production to engine components for the 3.8L, V-6 Phoenix engine. This coming despite the fact that the Chrysler Group reported an operating loss of $1.5 billion in 2006 and expects to eliminate 13,000 positions group-wide, including 800 jobs at the Perrysville factory by 2011 when the conversion is completed.

Another large project scheduled for construction this year is a $500 million metallurgical coke plant planned by U.S. Coking Group, LLC in Oregon, Ohio. Despite bringing contractors on board at the beginning of the year, the project still requires financing to move forward. In a related move, Sun Coke Company will begin construction this spring on an expansion of its new metallurgical coke plant in Haverhill, Ohio. The $230 million project includes a 67-megawatt cogeneration plant.

With 1,650 operational industrial plants, Ohio is the largest state in the Great Lakes region terms of industrial plant population.
