Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pattern Energy Group LP (San Francisco, California) said last week it has secured $11 billion in financing and begun construction of the SunZia Transmission and SunZia Wind projects, billing them as the largest clean energy infrastructure project in U.S. history.
The financing "serves as an example for other ambitious renewable infrastructure initiatives that are needed to accelerate our transition to a carbon-free future," Pattern Energy Chief Executive Officer Hunter Armistead said in a press release.
The work includes a 550-mile, 525-kilovolt, high-voltage, direct-current (HVDC) transmission across New Mexico and Arizona, with the ability to transport three gigawatts of electricity. The power will be generated by the SunZia Wind facility, which will sprawl across three counties in New Mexico, according to the company, which says the wind farm is the largest wind project in the Western Hemisphere.
SunZia Wind is expected to utilize turbines from Siemens Gamesa (Zamudio, Spain). Pattern Energy has picked Quanta Services Incorporated (Houston, Texas) to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services.
The project's completion is expected in 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for a detailed project report.
In May, Pattern Energy announced it had signed two long-term power purchase agreements for some of the power from the wind project. For more on that, see May 17, 2023, article - Pattern Energy Signs PPAs for Major SunZia Wind Project.
Industrial Info also is tracking nine projects that are tied to the SunZia transmission line. GMI subscribers can click here for the project reports. Industrial Info has tracked the transmission line project since 2011.
The financing includes about $8.8 billion in construction and term facilities, according to Pattern Energy.
