Researched by Industrial Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Rumors soon became reality when workers at Pella Corporation's (Pella, Iowa) plant in Fairfield, Ohio, announced the factory would close its doors after 11 years of service and operations. The Fairfield plant, which manufactures exterior doors and frames, took a heavy hit as a result of the housing market plunge and the slowdown in the residential construction industry, which is at 70% of its peak in 2005, with no signs of rebounding anytime soon.
Pella, officials are hoping for voluntary separations or early retirements as part of the job cuts. Approximately 250 employees are estimated to be without work due to the closure scheduled for mid-2011. Some workers will have the opportunity to relocate to other company facilities, or offered severance and training for job placements. Other incentives will be in place for those who decide to stay until the plant close.
Pella Corporation will continue to manufacture its entry-door systems, with production moving to the company's largest manufacturing facility in Pella, Iowa, which will optimize the cost of operations and cut shipping time to its customers.
