Phase I of China's First 10-Gigawatt Wind Power Base Begins Full Operations

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The ceremony for completion of Phase I and the launch of Phase II at the 10-gigawatt (GW) Jiuquan windfarm complex, and for the commissioning of the Gansu 750-kilovolt (kV) interconnection project, was held at the 750-kV Dunhuang Substation in Jiuquan City, Gansu province, on November 3, 2010. Phase I of China's first 10-GW wind-power base has begun full operations.

In April 2008, the planning for a wind-power base, which has a total planned capacity of 12.71 GW, received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission, the top planner in China. Through competitive bidding, 18 influential wind power investors in China were involved in Phase I construction; each was responsible for the construction of a single windfarm. The State Grid Corporation of China (Beijing) is responsible for the construction of the associated grid projects. All windfarms will be connected to the Northwest grid for united dispatching. Phase I has a total planned capacity of 5.16 GW, and construction began on August 8, 2009. So far, the actual installed capacity of Phase I is 5.36 GW. It's expected that these windfarms will generate 12.3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, which is equivalent to about 5 million metric tons of coal.

Following the completion of Phase I, construction of Phase II was launched on the same day. The planned capacity of Phase II will be 8 GW, which is mainly distributed in places such as Guazhou, Yumen and Subei, in Gansu province. Presently, Gansu is trying to get approval within this year, begin construction of Phase II next year, and complete the project by 2015.
