Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Meridian Energy Limited (Wellington, New Zealand) recently confirmed plans to conduct a major refurbishment of the 90-megawatt (MW) Waitaki Waitaki hydro plant based in Invercargill, New Zealand. According to the proposal, Waitaki hydro plant will undergo major refurbishments on six operating hydro units.

This huge refurbishment program, which has a capital value of $70 million, will involve major upgrades on the turbines, breakers and generator rewinding. Meridian is currently conducting preliminary design for this project, and the detailed configuration and timeline will be decided by early 2013.

The Waitaki hydro station is the first hydro station that was built under the Waitaki hydro scheme in 1945. Meridian took seven years to complete the construction of this plant when the first two units were commissioned during 1945, producing 30 MW of electricity. Meridian extended the capacity of the plant by adding four 15-MW generating units during 1937 to 1954, brining the capacity of the plant to 90 MW. All six units were built using 11-kilovolt generators and 15-MW turbines that were manufactured by English Electric Company.

Meridian will put forth the proposal for funding in April 2013, and expects to receive the approval for expenditure by December 2013. Upon receiving the approvals, Meridian will shortlist the equipment, consumables and the specialty subcontractors, which will take place during 2014. A five-year refurbishment program will start by July 2014, and full commercial operation of the plant is expected to be in May 2019.
