Power, Automotive Lead Michigan to $11.9 Billion in Industrial Projects Under Construction

Home to the capital of the U.S. auto industry -- Detroit -- the automotive sector takes a front seat in Michigan's $11.9 billion in industrial projects under construction.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Home to the capital of the U.S. auto industry -- Detroit -- the automotive sector takes a front seat in Michigan's $11.9 billion in industrial projects under construction. While Industrial Info is tracking about $4 billion worth of automotive projects underway in the state, this is followed closely by the power generation sector, with $3.76 billion worth.

The electric vehicle and hybrid sector is taking the vehicle market by storm, and leading auto producer Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) is underway with a building expansion at its Dearborn truck manufacturing plant to help bring hybrid and fully electric vehicle technology to what is one of the best-selling vehicles in the U.S., the F-150 pickup. Early last year, Ford began the expansion, which entails constructing a 500,000-square-foot building along with battery-manufacturing equipment. Ford is investing approximately $700 million in the plant. The project is expected to be completed later this year. Stellantis NV (Amsterdam, Netherlands) also is making waves in the hybrid world with the retool and modernization of its plant in Detroit, which will help expand production and testing for the next generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango and a new plug-in hybrid vehicle. The project kicked off at the beginning of this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

While construction of natural gas-fired power plants has slowed in the U.S. in recent years, Industrial Info is tracking more than $2 billion in gas-fired power projects under construction in Michigan. Two of the largest of these are being built on brownfield sites, such as Indeck Energy Services Incorporated's (Buffalo Grove, Illinois) 1,076-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle plant at a former railroad yard in Niles, about 10 miles north of South Bend, Indiana. In a press release, the Port of Indiana at Burns Harbor said that six ships carrying more than 600 pieces of equipment for the plant was one of the largest shipments in its 50-year history. The project is expected to be completed in 2022. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the project report.

Renewable power also is making an appearance in the state, and DTE Energy Company (NYSE:DTE) (Detroit) is underway with construction on its 225-MW Meridian Windfarm in Midland. The facility will use 77 Vestas and General Electric (NYSE:GE) turbines with capacities of 3.6 MW and 2.82 MW, respectively. Construction kicked off earlier this year and is expected to wrap up in early 2022. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

The Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry also comes in strong for project activity, with more than $1.7 billion of projects under construction. In Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan is underway with the renovation of four buildings to fill up approximately 186,000 square feet of space with flexible analytical laboratories to increase the capacity and expedite the process of medical clinical testing services, including pathology, along with administrative and instructional space. The project kicked off in 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2023. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for the project report.

E-commerce, cloud computing and streaming giant Amazon.com Incorporated's (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) reach seems ever-present, and the company is expanding in Michigan with the construction of a fulfillment center and delivery station at the former site of the Pontiac Silverdome on the northwest outskirts of Greater Detroit. The stadium was home to the Detroit Lions from 1975 to 2001 and, for most of that time, was the largest stadium in the National Football League. Amazon's 199,000-square-foot delivery station and 823,000-square-foot fulfillment center is expected to be completed soon. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
