Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last month, Genera PR LLC (San Juan, Puerto Rico), which is in charge of the operation and maintenance of the thermal generation plants of the state-owned PREPA GenCo until 2033, launched a call for bids for the installation of 430 megawatts (MW) of battery energy storage systems (BESS). In total, nine storage units with capacities between 8 and 104 MW will be installed in PREPA GenCo's different generation plants. The company will be receiving proposals until the end of March, and the contract is expected to be signed in May. Construction work may begin at the end of the year.

This is just one example of solar and BESS projects currently under development in Puerto Rico. For example, Ciro Energy Group (San Juan) is currently moving forward with the construction of the Ciro One project in Salinas. With 90 MW of photovoltaic (PV) generation capacity and 51.5 MW of lithium titanate (LTO) battery-storage capacity, this will be the largest photovoltaic plant in Puerto Rico when it enters commercial operation by the end of the year. Clean Flexible Energy LLC (Humacao, Puerto Rico), a subsidiary of AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia), is about to begin construction of two photovoltaic parks: one in Salinas with 120 MW of generation capacity and 100 MW of storage, and another in Jobos with 80 MW of generation capacity and 100 MW of storage. Subscribers can read detailed information on the Salinas and Jobos projects.

A PV park in Coamo with 100 MW of generation capacity and 55 MW of storage capacity also is about to start construction. The project is being developed by Convergent Energy and Power (New York, New York), a pioneer in the development of large-scale storage projects. Click here for the project report.

These projects are part of Puerto Rico's auction program to obtain power purchase agreements (PPAs) for a total of 3.75 gigawatts (GW) of new photovoltaic generation and 1.5 GW of storage capacity. This is part of Puerto Rico's energy transition plan, which aims for a 100% share of renewable energy in its generation matrix by 2050, with intermediate targets of 40% in 2025 and 60% in 2040. The PPA auction program was initially planned to be divided into six tranches. The first tranche was tendered in 2021 with a purported capacity of more than 800 MW of new PV capacity and 350 MW of BESS capacity. Initially, 18 projects were awarded, but only eight contracts were validated--for 560 MW of PV capacity and 200 MW of new BESS capacity, to which an additional 150MW is expected to be added.

Tranches 2 and 3, totaling 1 GW of new PV and 500 MW of new BESS capacity, were tendered in 2022 and 2023, respectively, and both are expected to be awarded before the middle of the year. Regarding the remaining three tranches, it is anticipated that they will be condensed into a single tranche that completes the total capacity.
