Salt River Project Adds Generation and Jobs at Santan Generating Station

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Salt River Project Agriculture Improvement and Power District (SRP) (Phoenix, Arizona), a subdivision of the state of Arizona, is in the process of completing an expansion of the 300-megawatt (MW) Santan Generating Station in Gilbert, Arizona. SRP has just gone commercial with the first of two combined-cycle units. Unit 5 consists of two GE natural gas-fired combustion turbine/generators (CT), model MS 7001 FA, with Alstom heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), and a GE steam turbine/generator (ST) for an additional 550 MW. The second unit (Unit 6), to be completed by June 2006, will consist of identical equipment to Unit 5, except that it will have one CT, with one HRSG unit, and will increase the additional capacity to 825 MW.

Santan Generating Station was originally built in 1973 to 1975. Santan's design had originally been to burn oil and natural gas, but due to environmental constraints, it is now limited to natural gas. The old GE combined-cycle units were 75 MW single-shaft units with GE MS 7001B CT's, each with GE HRSG and GE ST. Operations of the old plant called for two people per shift, and with the addition of Unit 5, it will go to four people per shift. For Unit 6, staffing will go to five per shift.

Santan Generating Station's first 300 MW were built on a turn-key basis by GE, which supplied the engineering, construction, and equipment, at a cost of $55 million, plus another $20 million in upgrades. Subsequent expansions also used GE turbine/generators, but the engineering for them was supplied by Sargent & Lundy LLC (Chicago, Illinois), and construction by The Industrial Company (TIC) (Steamboat, Colorado), at a cost of about $350 million.
