Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation has rescheduled its annual maintenance shutdown of the company's kraft pulp and paper mill in West Point, Virginia, from March to May of this year. The company is targeting May 23 to commence weeklong maintenance repairs and overhauls. The mill's products are manufactured for the packaging markets and include linerboard and corrugating medium.
Major operations at the mill include a recycled fiber line and a virgin fiber line with batch and continuous digesters; an oxygen-based, three-stage bleach plant; two black-liquor recovery boilers; three paper machines; power boilers; and five turbine generators that provide up to 100 megawatts of electricity.
The West Point mill has been in operation since 1914 and currently employs just more than 500 workers. In Virginia, Smurfit-Stone owns a mill in Hopewell, two smaller plants near Richmond, and a plant in Martinsville.
Rock-Tenn Company (NYSE:RKT) (Norcross, Georgia) has announced it is acquiring Smurfit-Stone in a stock and cash transaction worth $3.5 billion, which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2011.
