Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Africa is progressing with a measured expansion of its nuclear power capacity as part of its long-term energy planning.
Industrial Info Resources is tracking five nuclear projects in South Africa, worth US$20.21 billion. Subscribers to the Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can view a full list of projects.
The country currently operates about 1,800 megawatts (MW) of nuclear capacity from the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, contributing approximately 4-5% of the national electricity mix, which remains largely dependent on coal. Under its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2025), South Africa is targeting the addition of 3 to 4 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2039, with an initial phase of around 1,200 MW expected in the mid-2030s.
Potential sites such as Duynefontein, Thyspunt and Bantamsklip are being evaluated to support future development, with an emphasis on leveraging existing infrastructure. In parallel, the operational life of Koeberg has been extended to 2044-2045, ensuring continuity of supply as new capacity is gradually introduced. The country is also assessing a mix of conventional large-scale reactors and emerging technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs), reflecting a phased and flexible approach toward strengthening its energy mix.
