The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has officially approved 124 new renewable energy generation facilities, driving a massive R20.18 billion (US$1.2 billion) wave of private and public capital directly into the nation's power infrastructure. Out of the 124 approved projects, 61 facilities will connect directly to the state-owned Eskom transmission grid. Meanwhile, 63 projects are designated to hook into municipal distribution networks, allowing cities to integrate localized private generation and protect urban economies from national grid failures.
Approved during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year (April to June 2026), this extensive deployment framework authorizes 804 megawatts (MW) of new wind and solar capacity. The near-term construction pipeline is divided between utility-scale wind farms and commercial solar deployments. Just two large-scale wind projects account for 568 MW (over 70.6%) of the entire newly approved capacity pool, with full commercial commissioning anticipated within the next 18 to 24 months. Conversely, the remaining 236 MW is spread across 122 separate solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities.
Industrial Info Resources is tracking 637 capital wind and solar power projects in South Africa, with a total investment value of US$130 billion.
