Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Basin Electric Power Cooperation (Bismarck, North Dakota) is working toward the completion of its 300-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle facility. The Deer Creek Generating Station is located in Elkton, Brookings County, South Dakota. Once completed, this facility will be a one-on-one natural gas fired combined-cycle unit.
This plant will have a 170-MW GE MS7001FA with a Nooter Erikson heat recovery steam generator and a 130-MW Alstom STF steam turbine. This process of using the recovered heat to turn the steam turbine is a very efficient use of exhaust that would otherwise have been released into the atmosphere.
On April 18, the Deer Creek Generating Station was able to establish first fire in the GE Gas Turbine, allowing the gas turbine to run at 3,600 rpm to test the turbine's performance without any load before beginning commercial operations.
On April 19, the initial synchronization was established by Deer Creek to the local grid system. Deer Creek is currently testing and commissioning the units prior to their commercial operating date, which is targeted for mid-July.
