Summary

Amid record-high steel shipments and a strong outlook for the coming two years, Steel Dynamics is set to build out capacity through a series of expansions and at least one major grassroot development.

Market Shaping Up for Growth

Following second-quarter steel shipments of 3.7 million tons, a quarterly record for the company, Steel Dynamics Incorporated expressed confidence that market conditions would support strong domestic steel and aluminum consumption through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. Industrial Info Resources is tracking 34 operational plants from Steel Dynamics, as well as one proposed and one under construction, which are attached to projects totaling more than $430 million of investment.

According to Industrial Info Resources data, the plant under construction also is the company's only grassroot project in development: a scrap-recycling plant in Dayton, Texas. Operated by subsidiary OmniSource LLC, the plant is expected to support steel fabricators, automakers and other clients in the Gulf Coast region. Industrial Info Resources offers more information on the project in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Plant and Project databases, where readers can find details--including key contacts, investment values and necessary equipment--in a plant profile and project report.

Steel Dynamics' metals-recycling operations fared well in the second quarter, with higher volumes offsetting a dip in prices. "Scrap flows seasonally improved in the second quarter, resulting in ample supply as domestic steel mills increased utilization," the company said in a quarterly earnings-related press release.

In April, Steel Dynamics began operations at its 160,000-ton-per-year biocarbon production facility in Columbus, Mississippi. The plant is designed to supply the company's electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills with Biochar, which is bioproduct manufacturer Aymium's renewable alternative to fossil-fuel carbons. Steel Dynamics and Aymium formed their SDI Biocarbon Solutions joint venture in 2022 to explore such opportunities.

SDI Biocarbon is seeking to expand the biocarbon facility's production of Biochar, which is a carbon-rich, biomass-based charcoal, to 480,000 tons per year. The expansion is expected to be finished within the coming year, and coincides with ongoing refractory rebuilds on two EAF units and rebuilds on two reheat furnaces. Readers can learn more from a plant profile and detailed reports on the biocarbon project and its expansion, as well as the EAF and reheat furnace rebuilds.

By the Numbers
  • More than $430 million: Total investment at Steel Dynamics' operational, proposed and under-construction facilities
  • 3.7 million tons: The company's record-high steel shipments in the second quarter
  • 480,000 tons per year: Projected total output of Biochar, upon completion of Steel Dynamics' production plant in Mississippi

Rolling Out More Capacity

"During the second quarter [of] 2026, steel pricing continued to improve, resulting in strong performance across our steel platform, driving a sequential quarterly increase in consolidated operating income of $162 million," said Mark Millett, the chief executive officer of Steel Dynamics, in the company's quarterly earnings-related press release. "Steel fundamentals continued to strengthen during the second quarter, as pricing improved, demand remained solid, and customer inventory levels declined, remaining lower than historical norms."

Executives also championed flat-rolled steel markets, where they pointed to solid demand and lean inventory levels support a tight market environment. Steel Dynamics is proposing a series of modifications and upgrades to its steel-rolling mill in Huntington, West Virginia, which produces 300,000 tons per year of rail and beam. The company also is performing partial refractory rebuilds at its rolling mill in Butler, Indiana, which produces 3 million tons per year.

The Huntington project remains in its early planning phases, but the Butler project is set to be completed in the fourth quarter. Readers can lean more from reports on the Huntington and Butler projects, and profiles of the Huntington and Butler plants.

Within flat rolled steel, "lead times are elevated and customers continue to express optimism," said Barry Schneider, the chief operating officer, in the earnings call. "We're also seeing continued improvement in value-added pricing spreads, which have returned to more normalized levels, benefiting from the impact of the core trade cases successfully resolved last year. Long product steel markets are also strong, driven by strength in non-residential construction."

Steel Dynamics' net sales for the second quarter totaled $6.09 billion, a 33.4% increase from second-quarter 2025, while net income totaled $534.09 million, a 78.79% increase.
