Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking project spending plans to develop 113 facilities in the sugar industry across the U.S. and Canada. Project spending plans go into most segments of the industry, from highly industrialized beet sugar factories to biomass facilities that turn sugarcane into energy. The amassed total investment value of these projects is $1.65 billion and consists of projects ranging in value from $500,000 to $500 million.

Nine projects, including a bulk sugar storage addition and wastewater treatment lagoon addition, have completion dates scheduled for 2016. By the end of 2017, another 63 projects worth $244.25 million are slated to wrap up construction. While project delays are probable, figures for 2018 forecast the bulk of capital spending with 21 projects kicking-off construction, worth $1.2 billion.
Beet sugar processing factories comprise 67% of all sugar-related projects, either building grassroot facilities, expanding existing factories or adding more storage to store and distribute processed sugar.
One of the largest projects is Amalgamated Sugar Company LLC's (Boise, Idaho) plant to build a $500 million sugar processing plant that will kick-off in the third quarter of 2018 in Idaho. A few more examples of new facilities in the sugar industry include:
- a $400 million biomass to sugar plant in Louisiana
- a $150 million beet sugar processing facility expansion in Minnesota
- a $100 million beet sugar processing plant expansion in North Dakota
- a $90 million sugar processing plant expansion in Colorado
